Refinish or Replace / 01

Why most Redding kitchens should be refinished, not replaced

A lot of homes around Redding were built with solid oak or stained wood cabinets that are still in great shape structurally. The boxes are sound, the doors close fine, and the only problem is that they look like 1995. Painting them is the fastest way to make the whole kitchen feel new.

A fraction of the cost

New cabinets mean new boxes, new doors, installation, and often new counters and plumbing work because the old ones do not survive the tear-out.

Refinishing keeps everything that already works and only changes what you see.

No demolition

Nothing gets ripped out. Your granite, backsplash, sink and appliances stay right where they are, and so does your kitchen, for most of the project.

Counters, appliances and floors are masked and protected the whole time.

When replacing makes sense

If the boxes are water damaged, the particleboard is swelling under the sink, or you want a different layout, paint will not fix that.

Tim will tell you honestly which camp your kitchen is in at the estimate.
Our Process / 02

How we paint cabinets so the finish lasts

Cabinets take more abuse than any other painted surface in the house: hands, grease, steam and constant opening and closing. A finish that lasts comes from prep, so that is where most of the time on a Talbot cabinet job goes.

01

Walk-through, colors and a free written estimate

Tim looks at every door, drawer and box, checks for damage or loose joints, and talks through colors and sheen with you. You get a written estimate with the scope, the schedule and the total cost.

02

Doors and drawers off, labeled and hardware bagged

Every door and drawer front comes off and is labeled so it goes back exactly where it came from. Hinges and pulls are bagged and kept with their doors. Planning new hardware? Tell us at the estimate so old holes can be filled before paint.

03

Masking the kitchen

Counters, backsplash, appliances, walls and floors are covered before any sanding starts. The cabinet boxes and face frames are painted in place, so the protection around them matters.

04

Cleaning, degreasing and sanding

Years of cooking leave a film on cabinets that paint will not stick to. Everything is thoroughly cleaned and degreased, then sanded so the primer has something to grip. Dings and gaps are filled at this stage.

05

Primer, then a smooth sprayed finish

A bonding primer goes on first, which is the step that keeps paint from chipping off slick or stained wood. Doors and drawer fronts are then finished in a protective spray tent for a smooth, even coat without brush marks, and the boxes and frames get the same finish in place.

06

Rehang, clean up and final walk-through

Doors and drawers go back on and are adjusted, masking comes down and the kitchen is cleaned. Then we go over every cabinet together. The balance is due only after your final approval. Read more about how we work.

Timing & Cost / 06

What drives the price and the schedule

What drives the cost. The number of doors, drawers and cabinet boxes, their condition, how much repair and filling is needed, whether you are going light over dark wood, and extras like an island in a second color, vanities or built-ins. Refinishing still comes in at a fraction of what new cabinets cost.

How long it takes. It depends on the size of the kitchen and the finish you choose. Your estimate lays out the schedule, including which days parts of the kitchen are off-limits, and once we start we stay on your project until it is done.

Living with new paint. Cabinet paint feels dry within hours but takes a few weeks to fully harden. Go gently on it during that time and skip harsh cleaners. After that, a damp cloth is all it needs.

No surprises. Everything is written into your free estimate before work begins. Request a cabinet painting estimate or call (530) 515-1078.

Questions / 08

Cabinet painting questions from Redding homeowners

Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it compared to replacing them?

If the cabinet boxes are solid and you like the layout, usually yes. Refinishing costs a fraction of new cabinets, there is no demolition, and your counters, backsplash and plumbing stay where they are. Replacement makes more sense when boxes are water damaged or falling apart, or when you want to change the layout. Tim will tell you honestly which camp your kitchen is in at the estimate.

Can you paint oak cabinets, and will the grain show?

Yes. Taking dated oak to a clean painted finish is the most common cabinet job we do in Redding. Oak has an open grain, so some of that texture can still show through paint, especially in raking light. Tim will walk you through what to expect on your doors before any work begins.

Do you spray or brush cabinet doors?

Doors and drawer fronts come off, are labeled and are finished in a protective spray tent for a smooth, even coat without brush marks. Cabinet boxes and face frames stay in place and are carefully masked so counters, appliances, walls and floors are protected.

Will painted cabinets chip or peel?

Painted cabinets hold up when the prep is right: thorough degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer before the finish coats. That is where most of our time goes. Paint feels dry within hours but takes a few weeks to fully harden, so we recommend gentle use and no harsh cleaners during that period.

How long does cabinet painting take, and can I use my kitchen?

It depends on the number of doors and drawers, their condition and the color change. Your written estimate includes the schedule, including the days when parts of the kitchen are off-limits, and once we start we stay on your project until it is finished.

What colors can you paint cabinets?

Any color you like. White, off-white, black and deep blues and greens are all popular in Redding kitchens, and two-tone kitchens with a contrasting island are common too. We can help you narrow choices with samples before you commit.

Do you paint bathroom vanities and built-ins too?

Yes. We refinish bathroom vanities, laundry room cabinets, built-in shelving, fireplace mantels and entertainment centers with the same prep and finish process we use on kitchens.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Talbot Painting Inc is licensed, insured and bonded, and we have more than 80 five-star Google reviews from homeowners in Redding and Shasta County.
